The Million Veteran Program (MVP) is a national research program to learn how genes, lifestyle, and military exposures affect health and illness. Since launching in 2011, over 825,000 Veteran partners have joined one of the world's largest programs on genetics and health.

In 1967, VA performed the first successful liver transplants and developed techniques for suppressing the body's natural attempt to reject transplanted tissue.

The NPCs across the country bring over $250 million a year to the VA Research program which supports clinicians, researchers and most importantly veterans access to cutting edge medicine.

In 1990, VA researchers discovered a peptide in venom from the Gila monster, a type of lizard, that would eventually serve as the basis for a widely used diabetes drug.

VA has three Nobel Prize winners and seven Lasker-DeBakey Award winners.
The Nobel Prize winners are:
1998 - Ferid Murad, M.D., Ph.D. - nitric oxide
1977 - Andrew W. Schally, Ph.D., M.D.h.c. (Multi), D.Sc.,h.c. - peptide hormone
1977 - Rosalyn Yalow, Ph.D. - radioimmunoassay

Aside from bringing in a quarter billion dollars a year to the VA Research program, the nonprofits across the country have some of the lowest overhead rates to conduct research.
